Travelling to our school

Here is a summary of our school travel situation:

There is just one entrance to the school site.
There is a separate gate for pedestrians (footpath) and vehicles (road).
The number of car parking spaces (approx. 40 in total) is more than adequate for the number of vehicles that park on-site.
The school opening hours for pupils is 8.50 – 12.00am and 1.00 – 3.15pm. However, there are clubs that meet before school (at 8.00am) and after school (until 4.30pm) on most days of the week, depending on the time of year.
Vehicular access is restricted between 8.30 – 9.15am or 2.45 – 3.30pm. During these times the school gate is closed.
There is a private nursery on-site and the staff share the school’s car park.
Special arrangements are made for parents/pupils who have disabilities or restricted mobility. Car park permits can be authorised by the Headteacher with each case being considered on its individual merits.
At the moment there is no specified parking area for disabled drivers. This will be addressed when the car park is resurfaced and marked (awaiting result of bid to LEA).
Parents who drop their children off at the nursery are not allowed any vehicular access between 8.30 – 9.15am or 2.45 – 3.30pm. During these times the school gate is closed.
We have a school crossing patrol who keeps in regular communication with the school and who receives copies of the weekly newsletter. This allows him to know then the school is closed or if any special events are taking place that might mean a change to the normal school hours (including clubs before or after school).
The school crossing patrol is sited on a pedestrian crossing on the Eastwood Road. Parents and children can use the crossing to cross the road safely during the times when the patrol is not on duty.
Eastwood Road is a dangerous road and cars regularly exceed the speed limit of 30mph. The crossing patrol has been involved in several ‘near-misses’ all of which have been reported to the local authority

The school campaigned for (and got) flashing warning lights on Eastwood Road in the vicinity of the crossing patrol.
Children are reminded on a regular basis to use the school footpaths and not to walk in the school roadway.
We no longer have a walking bus as parents were not prepared to volunteer in sufficient numbers to make it viable.
Cycling to school is permitted for any child although there are no cycle storage facilities. Only one parent has ever enquired about cycling to school and arrangements were made to keep the bikes secure.
We do not provide any specific cycle training. When parents were asked in 2005 to come forward for training in order to organise Cycling Proficiency (on a paid basis) there was no response.
We do not have CCTV although the system operated by the adjoining nursery covers the roadway and footpaths at the front of the building.
There is a public bus service that stops approx 100m from the school.
Road Safety Education, supported by staff from the Local Authority, is taught as part of our PSHE curriculum in all years, but more specifically at Key Stage 1.
