More children walk home than walk to school because parents drop their children off in the mornings, en route for other destinations (work, other schools, etc.)

We asked the children how they would prefer to travel to and from school –

Preferred Method Nos %
Walk 80 42%
Cycle 63 33%
Car 41 21%
Car Share 2 1%
Please note that the youngest children found it very difficult to give an answer in this section.
We have discounted those who preferred to come to school by jet-ski, helicopter, etc.

Cycling to school
Although many pupils consider that cycling would be a good way to travel to school, the Governors and senior staff consider that the roads around Wyburns are far too dangerous for anything but an experienced adult cyclist.  There is no access to the school without using Eastwood Road, The Chase or Daws Heath Road.  There is a unanimous feeling at the school from all staff that these roads are not suitable for young cyclists.  This is almost certainly the reason why nobody presently cycles to or from school.  The parent questionnaire suggests that parents also find cycling a dangerous option for their children.

Problems, issues and solutions
We obtained a map of road traffic accident locations for the period Jul 99 – June 02 which showed that;
13 primary aged children were injured within a one mile radius of the school,
Four of the 13 incidents were accidents on the A127 Southend Arterial,
None of the incidents involving primary aged children occurred within the school’s catchment area.
No child from Wyburns has been involved in any traffic accident for at least the past 5 years (touch wood!)
