Results of the Parent Questionnaire

We asked parents how we could make the walk to school safer. 23% thought the school could do more with better road safety education and so we will pursue this option.

By far the biggest perceived problem was the parking outside the school and in Nevern Road. Inconsiderate parking on the pavement caused parents so many concerns. This problem will be addressed, but we will need the support of the local authority to do this.

The number of people saying they would support a walking bus is similar to when we first set this up 4 years ago. Unfortunately, very few parents followed through with their enthusiasm and the bus stopped running after just a few terms, due to lack of interest. Many parents in our survey thought a walking bus was a good idea but, for one reason or another, went on to say that they would not use it.

Cycling is a popular option amongst the children but parents appear to agree with the views of the Wyburns staff. The roads around Wyburns are not safe for young cyclists. The provision of a cycle shelter would not change this.

Many parents thought that cycling proficiency training would be an asset, but I don’t think they realised that this is only available for children aged 11yrs or over. At the time of writing, only 12 children fall into this category .

Cycling on the footpath, I'm afraid, is not an option and would not be condoned by the police or the local authority.

We asked parents about car sharing but the vast majority feel that it would not be convenient for them. Wyburns staff also felt the same way about this option.
